The melody of the German folk song “Im Lauterbach hab’ ich mein’ Strumpf verlorn” was a favorite waltz in 19th century America. In 1864 Septimus Winner used it for his comic dialect song “Der Deitcher’s Dog,” or “Oh where, oh where ish mine little dog gone,” which became a big hit and eventually evolved into the familiar nursery song.
