I’m a professor of math transplanted from Connecticut to Oklahoma (now) who off-and-on plays 5-string banjo in what would probably be characterized as melodic clawhammer mode. I really enjoy working up arrangements of fiddle tunes for banjo (so far, mostly ones that are in D or G).
Favorite Fiddlers. this is hard but I would say 1. for repertoire and chops: James Bryan, Bob Walters, John Hartford. 2. for listening: Liz Carroll, Kevin Burke. 3. for inspiration (especially with working up variations): Herman Johnson.
Also Herman Johnson was from OKC area (as was Marion Thede)!
And most indispensable fiddle tune collections: Phillips; Christeson; Milliner/Koken.
