KININVIE HOUSE. Scottish, Strathspey. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by William Marshall (1743-1832). Kininvie House is the ancient home of the Leslies, located in lower Glen Fiddich, near Rothes in the Spey valley.. Within the west wing of Kininvie House is a square tower which may date back to 1480, but whose walls were reconstructed in the late 16th century. Additions were made to the building in the mid-19th century.
Moyra Cowie (The Life and Times of William Marshall, 1999) documents and obscure but interesting convergence through Kininvie House, which was in Marshall's time occupied by the family of Archibald Young of Banff, the Duke of Gordon's solicitor in Banff. Marshall was employed by the Duke as Steward of the Household, and thus would have ample occasion to known Young. Young and his wife retired to Kininvie House. Their son, George Young, was commissioner to Sir Archibald Grant of Monymusk, the subject of the tune famously known as "Monymusk/Money Musk."
