BANNISTER'S HORNPIPE. AKA - "Banister Hornpipe." English, Hornpipe (cut or whole time). D Major (Rook): B Flat Major (Irwin). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. From the 1840 music manuscript book of John Rook (Multum in Parvo, or A Collection of Old English, Scotch, Irish, Welsh Tunes), a musician from Waverton, near Wifgton, Cumbria. Rook was a multi-instrumentalist, judging from the cover picture of his collection, and played what appears to be the Northumbrian small-pipes, bugle, flute, fife and fiddle, among others, as he indicates the collection is "for his amusement on the above instruments." The title may refer to the comic actor Jack Bannister (see note for "annotation:Bannister's Budget"). Lake District musician William Irwin entered the tune into his c. 1850 music copybook (as "Banister Hornpipe"), set in the key of B flat.
