CARROLLTOWN BREAKDOWN [2]. AKA and see "Shaddighee," "Silver Lake [5]." Old-time, Reel. USA, southwestern Pa. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Bayard (1981) believes this tune to be a derivative of "Buffalo Gals" (See "Buffalo Gals (1)"). Variants he notes are "Off to Charleston," and his (1944) No. 1b version of "Buffalo Gals," which he now considers to be "Carroltown Breakdown." The alternate name "Shaddighee" also appears in Don Messer’s volumes as "The Chatagee" but with a different tune.

Source for notated version: Bayard collected the tune from nine southwestern Pa. fiddlers and fifers.

Printed sources: Bayard (Dance to the Fiddle), 1981; No. 336A-I, pp. 318-321.
