PORTO BELLO. AKA and see “Moudiewart (The),” “Mowdiewart (The).” English, Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). The tune and country dance were printed by London publisher John Walsh in his Caledonian Country Dances, book 3 (c. 1740) and his Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 3 (c. 1744). The title references the Battle of Porto Bello [1], West Indies, taken from the Spanish by the English fleet commanded by Admiral Vernon in November, 1739 (see also "Portabello Hornpipe"). See also the similarly-titled “Portabella.”
