PEGGY MENZIES. Scottish (originally), Canadian; Reel. Canada, Cape Breton. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The cadences resolve to A dorian, but both strains continue to be primarily in G Major. David Baptie (Musical Scotland, 1894) attributes the reel to John MacAlpine (c. 1900-c. 1880) of Killin, Perthshire, who also composed "Mrs. Dr. Forbes" and "Glen Tilt Lodge." MacAlpine is said to have been "nearly, if not quite, equal to Duncan MacKercher" in skill on the fiddle. There are similarities to "Ross House" AKA "Miss Hamilton (3)" but inconclusive about whether the tunes are cognate.
