RED HEIFER, THE. This tune was one of four listed by Laura Ingells Wilder in her novel Little House in the Big Woods, in the chapter called “Dance at Grandpa's.” The protagonist remembered at the dance, set after the Civil War, and four tunes the fiddler played: “Money Musk,” “The Red Heifer,” “Devil's Dream (1),” and “Arkansas Traveler.” Three are extremely well-known, however, “The Red Heifer,” if an actual fiddle tune, is lost.
