BROWN PAPER HORNPIPE. AKA - "Johnston's Hornpipe." English, Hornpipe (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune appears in the c. 1835 music manuscripts of Joshua Burnett (Worsborough, South Yorkshire), G. Huddeswell of Leeds, West Yorkshire, and John Roose (c. 1850), Manchester. Kidson gives the attribution "by Thos. Pickering, MS 40, p. 27," and notes the 'A' part is very much like "Johnston's Hornpipe." "Ivy Leaf Reel (1)," printed in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883), and "Smoky Chimney (The)" in Francis O'Neill's Music of Ireland (1903) are cognate reels.
The first two measures of "Pibddawns y tant" (String Hornpipe) are nearly identical, but the remainder of the tune differs.
