GUÉNILLE, LA (The Rag). AKA – "Reel de la guénille." AKA and see "Rags (The)." French-Canadian, Reel (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB'CC'. Hart & Sandell (2001) note the title refers to a piece of cloth, and that it is a commonly heard tune in Québec. The attribute the tune's popularity in part to singer Mary Travers "La Boduc" (1894-1941) who set words to it. Travers/Mme Bolduc also recorded an instrumental version on harmonica as "La gaspésienne: reel" (1929). Fiddler Jos Vermette recorded a version of "La Guénille" as "Reel canadien" in 1923, while accordion player Alfred Montmarquette released his own "La Guénille" in 1928. Montreal fiddler Joseph Allard recorded "Reel de la guénille" in 1932.
