PAINE'S REEL. AKA and see “Dundee Hornpipe,” “Pantomime Reel (2).” American, Reel (2/4 time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A member of the large “Dundee Hornpipe,” “Kildare Fancy,” “Union Hornpipe (3)” family of tunes. Boston publisher Elias Howe 'borrowed' "Paine's Reel" and several others from Providence, Rhode Island, musician and teacher George Saunders' violin tutor. Francis O'Neill printed a version called "Kildare Fancy" (now part of uilleann piping repertory, after Patsy Tuohey, O'Neill's source), and a variant was entered into the c. 1880 music manuscript of George H. Watson (Swanton Abbott, Norfolk) as an untitled hornpipe (No. 75). The alternate titles given above (AKA and see) can also be found in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883).
