"Soap in the Washpan" was recorded by Andy Palmer (b. 1881, Anderson County, Ky., the featured fiddler and vocalist for north-central Kentucky's Jimmy Johnson String Band, in Richmond, Indiana, in August, 1932. It was released on Champion Records, a subsidiary of Gennett. The tune is played in Franklin County as "Hot Corn," and is related to the Stripling Brothers' "Horse Shoe Bend," according to Guthrie Meade (1980).
